Svalbard is a dramatic subject. Remote, not barren, the abundance of this arctic gateway paired by its proximity to Europe made Svalbard easy target for extraction. The islands were used as a base by whalers, who came in search of blubber; hunters who came for furs; and miners who came for coal. Ian van Coller’s work traces the legacy of human intervention in photographs that engage every aspect of the sublime.

Van Coller has accompanied climate change researchers on expeditions to study tropical glaciers. Defined by latitude, most tropical glaciers will be extinct within the next decade. Centerpiece of the exhibition is an oversized artist's book, Kilimanjaro: The Last Glacier; it features landscapes & portraits of porters. Scale aligns the book with its subject, and recalls ledgers & atlases, thus conjuring themes of archiving, mapping, & exploration.
