Ian Van Coller’s The Psychedelic Forests depict forest and jungle landscapes around the world. First captured while seeking to document rare and endangered birds, Ian van Coller later revisited images made in of the landscape in the studio. He visually pushes them to a space of enhancement that more accurately meets the sensory awe inspired by place itself. The shift might be subtle or drastic: in-camera choices like slowing shutter speed, post-production digital editing, or both. The artist’s choices produce palpable effect.

Van Coller’s The Psychedelic Forest photographs are sublime- beautiful and terrifying. The qualities of these artworks play not only to our eyes but for our senses. We don’t just see these works, we perceive them. And, they lure us. They are “trippy” and hypnotic. They are palpable- visceral. If we are not careful, we may become lost within them- trapped by inky, beckoning shadows, or swept into a dance with glimmers of light.
Each image plays differently. Some invite wonder by a shift in scale- root limbs are spider veins and broad shoulders, or the invitation to touch- cool pools or twisted branches. Others are prismatic or invite action through the movement of our eye. In “Rio Nambi,” a ray of light graces leaves in the darkness- this feels symphonic. In “Santa Marta” a fine mist floats overhead and becomes a rainbow of air. We want to precipitate, to float, to spread our wings and rest upon the sunlit branches.
But, how would we return?

About the Artist: Ian van Coller is a South African born, Bozeman, MT-based artist most celebrated for his artist’s books, hybridized images, and collaborative works* with climate change scientists. Overarching themes running through the Artist’s oeuvre include the ethics of planetary stewardship and humanitarianism explored through topics of duality (language), climate change, deep time, and extinction.
Van Coller teaches Photography at Montana State University. He earned a Guggenheim* in 2018. His work is in such notable public collections as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Getty Research Center, US Library of Congress, New York Public Library, Nelson-Atkins Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, and Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, as well as University collections Harvard, Stanford, Yale, UW-Madison, among others.
